...at the Yookamurra Wildlife Sanctuary.
First we went on the Mallee walk to learn heaps about the Mallee. What fascinating trees they are!
Absolutely beautiful, too.
The sun was setting and the scenery was just gorgeous.
As you can imagine, I took heaps more photos, but won't bore anyone with them.
We went for a night walk later on, and saw some boodies, woylies, possums and kangaroos. Incredibly fascinating creatures, all of them.
Thanks to the Mt. Pleasant Natural Resource Centre for organising this event! We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. :)
Two mad gnomes and a big garden. The Veggie Gnome does the edible stuff, the Berry Gnome the berries and taties.

Bees
Well, well, well. Finally we went and did a beekeeping course. Here are pictures taken during our practical.
Get your smokers going before you start on your hive(s).
Open the lid carefully and give them a little dose.
Take out frames as required. (Nice gloves!)
Inspect ....
... and look knowledgeable.
Have a bee. It's only a drone.
There's more where that came from. (No, they weren't all drones.)
A marvellous time was had by all. :)

Mt. Pleasant Fruit & Veg Swap
Another lovely Sunday morning spent at the fruit & veg swap, organised by the Mt. Pleasant Natural Resource Centre!
Even though we are still in the 'lean' months, the tables are always laden with produce, cuttings, seedlings, etc. from members' gardens.
You can get delicious goat's cheese.
Lettuce, greens, spring onions, mandarins.
Cuttings, cut flowers.
Parsley, mandarins, lemons, recipes, pretty flowers (no idea what they are).
Lemons, oranges, books (at the very end of the table).
This is really only a small selection of what you find during one morning (from 9 to 12 o'clock). I came quite late, so that is what I found after 10.30! Not bad, ey?
(There are also often chook eggs, duck eggs, jams, preserves, olives, walnuts, grapefruit, tadpoles of the bango frog, herbs, etc. Too much to list in one go. This all changes with the seasons, of course. Exciting times!)
There are no people in the pictures (I pushed them aside - gently, don't worry!), but that place is at times pumping and rocking, you wouldn't believe it!
Oh, and usually there is a great selection of cakes, biscuits and savoury stuff at the tea & coffee table. Sorry, no picture. Maybe next time. :)
Last Sunday, after the swap, we even got a half hour talk about grafting apple trees, by Bernie Farrow from the Rare Fruits Society, thrown in. How good is that?!
And that's the basket of citrus (plus a nettle beer recipe), that I brought back from the swap.

Mt. Pleasant Fruit & Veg Swap
The first Mount Pleasant Fruit & Veg Swap (organised by the Mt. Pleasant Natural Resource Centre) took place on Sunday, from 9pm - 12 noon. And what an exciting swap it was! We rocked up with 2 baskets. One with fruit and veg. The other full with a variety of cut leucadendrons. No photo of that basket. Sorry.
The concept is great. Bring whatever excess produce you have. Or anything you'd like to share. Produce, seeds, seedlings, your skills, worm castings, anything you can think of.
Put it all on the communal table. It's surprising how laden the table gets in no time. Then chat with fellow swappers over a good cup of coffee. Then do some browsing and 'shopping'. There was a lovely array of fruit and vegetables, seeds and seedlings.
We came home with a basket full of apples, green & purple beans, snow peas, some chillies, a new variety of garlic to plant, a Delicata pumpkin and a good bunch of silverbeet. What a great way to swap excess produce!

When gardeners and cooks get together
There will be plenty of produce from the garden that ends up on the table.
All kinds of salads and side dishes, accompaniments, main dishes, herbal concoctions, laughter.
The table ended up too small for all the bowls and platters, so we had to have a sideboard laden with dishes, too. Sorry, no picture of the sideboard.

Long lingering local lamb lunch...
...in Lenswood.
Take a bunch of lovely gardeners and sit them down at a table for a long lingering local lunch. What do you get? Not a lot of pictures!
But lots of laughter, good conversation, good food, good cheer.
The theme was local. Preferably from the garden or just around the corner.
The leg of lamb came from a friend's place (just around the corner), so did the shiraz (same place). Herbs, garlic, potatoes, berries from our garden.

For starters we had a selection of savoury bits & pieces - home-made, local, etc.
This is the last picture of the whole lingering lunch. After that we were too busy eating, chatting, laughing, drinking, eating...
I won't torture you by mentioning the rest of the menu. Everything was a hit! :)
Everyone contributed to the lunch by bringing something from the garden, local, home-made....
Thanks, folks! We had a wonderful time. Thank you for your company and your contribution to the lunch. :)

Let the porky feast begin!
Baked beans on toast for brekkie. With freshly juiced apples and good strong coffee.
Then spare ribs as a snack later in the morning, as all this cooking is very hungry work.
Finely sliced triple-cooked pig's ears.
As starter in a salad. Beautiful!
Chorizo & chickpea soup with poached egg. Devine!
The rest of the meal will have to wait until tomorrow. I am too full to continue.

Pigging out
As you can see here:
Then there is the menu for 2 days.
Then there is the menu for 2 days.
The meal.

Best crackling ever. Roast from the wood-fired oven.

Stuffed chops. Meat and veg in one.

Tomorrow we'll be REALLY pigging out. We'll start with the baked beans (slowly simmered with some roasted pork bones) and freshly baked sourdough bread. Snack of spare ribs at 10am.
5-course pig meal for lunch. Oink!
Diet starts on Wednesday. :)

A day out...
...in McLaren Vale. One of our favourite spots - the picnic place at Kay Brothers.
We didn't have any picnic there this time - too cold and windy. But we had booked into D'Arry's at D'Arenberg for a treat. Woohoo...and what a treat that was. Thank you, Nina! :)
The food, service, atmosphere, setting and most of all the company was superb!

Our first Food Connect box!
How exciting is that?! Today we picked up our first Food Connect fruit & vegetable box.
All produce is organic and locally grown. Except for the bananas, they are from Queensland, but still organic.
So whatcha reckon? 30 bucks for a box full of organic produce? I reckon that's pretty cool! The produce was picked on the weekend and now it's here. On our table.
This is the small box for 30 dollars. Feeds 1-2 people. Due to the heat, the produce had to be packed in recycled polystyrene boxes. When we pick up our next box, we'll return this one to our City Cousin.
Right. The suspense is killing us! Let's lift the lid.
Looking good!
Let's spread it out for a better look. YUM! I'm happy!
