Bonsai Egg

The nights are getting pretty cold (6C). During the day it is sunny, but the wind can be unpleasant. Day time temperature is around 16-17C.

The chooks can feel the cold, too. And they are moulting. No pictures of the scraggly beasts. Yet.
No wonder the eggs are getting smaller! (They have also slowed down their egg production.)

Sorry I am a non chicken owner (would like to be one) and I don't understand this. Why do chickens loose feathers when it gets colder? I am sure this is obvious to all chicken owners but I just don't understand would it not be better to get more feathers at this time of year?
I think your eggs are cute!

ElsieMay, our autumn is not normally that cold.

In autumn the chooks lose their old feathers to acquire new feathers for winter to protect them from the cold.

I hope you have a chance to get chooks, too. They are very entertaining creatures. :)
