Brussel sprouts

I have not had any success growing brussel sprouts. Yet. This year I am hoping to harvest a few.

So, this is what they look like at the moment. Loose sprouts on the stems. Will they 'hearten' up? I sure hope so. And how long does that take? When, oh when, can we harvest a delicious, home-grown brussel sprout?
Have you been successful with brussel sprouts? What's your trick? Advice?

  1. My sprouts were going really well, but then they all of a sudden up and died. Hubby HATES brussel sprouts so I suspected him. He swears he didnt touch them, but then he wasnt too upset when I told him about the disaster.
    What do you think?

  2. Angela, that's a real shame! Wouldn't want to hazard a guess, though. Teehee.. not getting involved there.

A really good way to convert sprout haters is to caramelize the brussel sprouts in a frying pan (or saucepan) with some butter/oil. Fry until they are lovely and golden brown. Maybe with some garlic. Then they are really flavoursome.
They can be a bit insipid, when just steamed.

Maybe next time you put the plants in a 'neglected' corner of your garden? ;)

  3. Also, Brussel Sprout chips can change their mind. Just pour some olive oil and cholula on a baking sheet and tilt pan until even. Peel off leaves from the brussel sprout head and lay them flat on the tray. sprinkle some season salt/garlic salt and bake! at about 350. Usually about 7 minutes. But just keep an eye on them.
