This is the first year that my female kiwi plant is flowering. They are absolutely gorgeous flowers!
The flower buds are rather intriguing, too.Unfortunately, the male kiwi plant is not flowering. It is still rather small and not doing much. So, unless kiwis can experience an immaculate conception, we won't get any kiwi fruit.
I shall go out and have a word with the male kiwi plant. Maybe next year?
I had just the same happen to me this year. Loys of flowers on my female kiwi and the male nothing. So no kiwis - pity I didn't plant a self fertile variety
ReplyDeleteOh, that is annoying!
ReplyDeleteYes, a self-fertile variety is very tempting.
Let's hope the males pick up their game next season. :)
I thought you had to have 1 of each - which are the self fertile varietiee?
ReplyDeleteThe one I know of is Jenny.
ReplyDeleteI had a female Hardy Kiwi(Ana) that developed blossoms two years ago, and I bought a male plant that Spring in the vain hope that it would arrive mature enough to provide flowers for the female. It didn't form any, not last year, and not even this year. But last year, the female plant did the unexpected: it self pollinated. Unfortunately, the person in charge of watering her was negligent in her duties, so the plant went into dormancy(thankfully didn't die) while I was on vacation. We never got to taste the fruit of my labors. This year, she has come back healthy with plenty of buds, and her younger clone has developed flower buds for the first time, but the male has none.
