Short answer: because I wanted to. ;) Long answer: I read about growing vegetables in foam boxes in several books and magazines. I finally found enough of these boxes to give it a go. Just to see how well things grow in these boxes. Also, I sowed carrots in another box because I was getting fed up with the slugs and snails that had destroyed several sowings in the last few months. So I thought I'd see whether the box would keep out those pests.
Filling the boxes: I started with a good layer of cow manure, then a layer of horse manure, followed by a layer of mushroom compost, a layer of compost and finally a layer of good (home-made) potting mix.

The spam never makes it onto the comment pages, as I am moderating all comments. But it is starting to get tedious to moderate all the spam. Sounds good. I like to grow carrots in foam boxes too or in a tub, That way I can get better soil at a good depth for them. Good luck.
