Red Currants

The Red Currants have started flowering. If all those flowers set fruit, we'll have a glut again. I am definitely NOT going to make another jar of red currant jelly. It's already piling up in the pantry. Help?

  1. hello veggie gnome

What about red currant vinegar? I saw some in our rambles down the Channel Area in Tasmania last week. I thought it was a good way to use them up.

  2. That's a great idea, Helen! Thank you so much.

I have never made vinegar. Must look up how to do that. Or would you have some good instructions? Thanks. :)

  3. I would do something similiar to making apple cider vinegar. Crush red currants, add a bit of sugar to help fermentation and some water (unchlorinated). Stir each day and see how it is after a couple of weeks. I would also put a teatowel over the container to keep out the vinegar flies.

  4. That sounds easy enough! Thanks for these instructions. I will definitely have a go at making this vinegar once the red currants are ripe. Thanks again! :) I'll keep you informed.

  5. How did your red currant vinegar turn out? I have lots of currants and, like you, don't need another jar of jelly.

  6. Hi Elaine! The vinegar is lovely. Easy enough to make with the instructions given by Helen. We won't have to make more vinegar this season, though, as we don't use much. Maybe I'll try to make red currant wine next?

Good luck with your red currants! :)
